Ingredients

  • 2 apples large, firm, such as Granny Smith; peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch wedges
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg large
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 Nonstick cooking spray as needed

Equipment

  • 1 Air fryer

Method

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
  2. Put the flour in a shallow bowl.
  3. Beat the egg in a second shallow bowl.
  4. Combine the panko, sugar, and cinnamon in a third shallow bowl.
  5. Pat the apple wedges dry.
  6. Dip each wedge in flour and shake off the excess.
  7. Dip each wedge in egg.
  8. Press each wedge into the panko mixture to coat.
  9. Lightly coat the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  10. Arrange the wedges in a single layer with space between them, then spray the tops.
  11. Air-fry at 375°F for 8–10 minutes, turning halfway, until golden and just tender when pierced; cook in batches as needed, spraying the basket between batches.
  12. Let the apple fries rest for 2 minutes before serving.

Notes

For the crispiest coating, arrange the wedges with space between them and cook in batches as needed. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 2 days; freezing is not recommended because the coating may lose its crispness. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free all-purpose flour and panko.
