Ingredients

For the frozen hot chocolate
  • 4 oz semisweet chocolate finely chopped
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 cup whole milk cold
  • 3 cups ice cubes
For the whipped cream
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream cold
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 0.25 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 1 1-quart saucepan
  • 1 6-cup blender

Method

Make the chocolate base
  1. Whisk the sugar, cocoa powder, and water in a 1-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until steaming and the sugar dissolves, 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  3. Stir in the chopped chocolate until smooth.
  4. Let the mixture cool for 5 minutes.
  5. Whisk in the cold milk.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a covered container and refrigerate until thoroughly cold, about 30 minutes.
Whip the topping
  1. Beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a medium bowl until medium peaks form, 2 to 3 minutes.
Blend and serve
  1. Blend the cold chocolate mixture and ice in a 6-cup blender on high until thick and smooth, 30 to 60 seconds.
  2. Divide between two glasses and top with the whipped cream.

Notes

For the smoothest texture, chill the chocolate base thoroughly before blending. Refrigerate the unblended base for up to 2 days; freezer: no for the finished drink. For a dairy-free variation, use dairy-free semisweet chocolate, unsweetened plant milk, and dairy-free whipping cream.
