Giant Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Giant chewy chocolate chip cookies bake with golden, set edges and centers that remain slightly soft. Refrigerating the dough before baking helps create thick cookies packed with semisweet chocolate chips.

Ingredients

  • 2.25 cups all-purpose flour spooned and leveled
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 0.75 tsp salt fine
  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted and cooled until warm
  • 1.25 cups light brown sugar packed
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg large
  • 1 egg yolk large
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Equipment

  • 2 18x13-inch baking sheet

Method

  1. Whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl.
  2. Whisk the melted butter with the brown sugar and granulated sugar in a large bowl until smooth.
  3. Whisk in the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla until fully combined.
  4. Stir in the flour mixture just until no dry streaks remain.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dough for 45 minutes, until firm.
  7. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  8. Line two 18x13-inch baking sheets with parchment paper.
  9. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
  10. Arrange 4 portions on each baking sheet, leaving at least 3 inches between them.
  11. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, rotating the sheets halfway through, until the edges are golden and set while the centers still look slightly soft.
  12. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets for 15 minutes.
  13. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool.

Notes

For thick, chewy cookies, refrigerate the dough until firm and spoon and level the flour rather than packing it into the measuring cup. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days; freeze baked cookies for up to 3 months. For a dairy-free option, use dairy-free butter and semisweet chocolate chips.
