Ingredients

For the hot chocolate
  • 8 cups whole milk
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 tsp salt kosher
  • 12 oz semisweet chocolate finely chopped
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the board
  • 1 bag (10 oz) mini marshmallows
  • 0.5 cup peppermint candies crushed
  • 1 jar (12 oz) caramel sauce
  • 1 pint strawberries washed and dried
  • 1 package (8 oz) shortbread cookies
  • 1 package (8 oz) chocolate-covered pretzels
  • 1 can (13 oz) whipped cream aerosol, chilled

Equipment

  • 1 5-quart saucepan
  • 3 small serving bowls
  • 1 18-inch serving board

Method

Make the hot chocolate
  1. Heat the milk in a 5-quart saucepan over medium-low heat for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until steaming but not boiling.
  2. Whisk in the cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and chopped chocolate for 2 to 3 minutes, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Arrange the board
  1. Put the mini marshmallows, crushed peppermint candies, and caramel sauce in three small serving bowls.
  2. Arrange the strawberries, shortbread cookies, and chocolate-covered pretzels on an 18-inch serving board, with the bowls alongside.
  3. Keep the whipped cream chilled until serving.
  4. Serve the hot chocolate in mugs with the board and whipped cream.
  5. Refrigerate perishable leftovers within 2 hours.

Notes

For the smoothest hot chocolate, whisk until the chopped chocolate is fully melted. Refrigerate hot chocolate and perishable board leftovers separately for up to 3 days; assembled board does not freeze well. For a dairy-free option, use plant-based milk, dairy-free chocolate, and dairy-free whipped topping.
