Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon
  • 20 saltine crackers
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup

Equipment

  • 1 10-inch skillet
  • 1 9x13-inch baking pan
  • 1 2-quart saucepan

Method

  1. In a 10-inch skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon for 8 to 10 minutes, turning as needed, until crisp.
  2. Transfer the bacon to paper towels, cool, and chop.
  3. Heat the oven to 350°F and line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  4. Arrange the saltine crackers in a snug single layer in the prepared pan.
  5. In a 2-quart saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup; bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring, then boil for 3 minutes while stirring constantly.
  6. Pour the hot caramel evenly over the crackers and bake for 5 to 7 minutes, until the caramel is bubbling throughout.
  7. Sprinkle the chopped bacon over the hot caramel and gently press it in.
  8. Cool completely in the pan for 1 to 2 hours, then break into bites.

Notes

For the cleanest bites, let the caramel cool completely before breaking it. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days; freezer storage is suitable. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free saltine-style crackers.
