Make the cupcakes
- Heat the oven to 350°F and line a 12-cup standard muffin pan with paper liners.
- Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt in a medium bowl.
- Whisk the pumpkin, granulated sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth.
- Stir in the flour mixture just until no dry streaks remain.
- Divide the batter evenly among the liners and bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cupcakes in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack and cool completely.
Make the frosting
- Beat the butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth.
- Add the cream cheese and beat just until combined.
- Add the powdered sugar in three additions, mixing on low after each.
- Mix in the caramel sauce just until smooth.
- Refrigerate the frosting for 20 to 30 minutes if needed to firm it.
- Spread the frosting over the completely cooled cupcakes.
Notes
For the neatest frosting, spread it only over completely cooled cupcakes. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; freeze unfrosted cupcakes for up to 2 months. For a gluten-free variation, use a measure-for-measure gluten-free flour blend.
